Sthala Puranam

A Sacred Legacy of Over 900 Years

More than 900 years ago, a devotee named Govindan had a divine experience while bathing in the holy Ganga at Kasi (Varanasi). He found a small Banalinga, the sacred symbol of Lord Shiva, about the size of his palm. Overwhelmed with joy, he held it close to his heart, placed it on his head with deep reverence, and danced in ecstasy. This precious Linga became known as Ullangai Lingam (palm-sized Lingam), and Govindan was lovingly called Ullangai Lingam Konarndha Nayanar—the devotee who brought the sacred Linga.

Interestingly, Govindan was the cousin of Sri Ramanuja, the great Vaishnavite saint. Though he was part of the Vaishnavite tradition, his devotion to Lord Shiva during this time was deeply heartfelt. It is believed that he also worshipped this Linga at Kalahasti before bringing it to Tharatchi and installing it here.

Later, on the advice of Acharya Ramanuja, the Chandragiri King Kattithevan Yadavarayan built this beautiful temple for Lord Shiva, honouring Govindan’s devotion.

Today, the same Banalinga from Kasi is still present in the sanctum sanctorum along with the main Shiva Lingam, radiating divine grace and spiritual power.
